What is an original study or primary research?

  • Original research studies are also known as primary or empirical studies.
  • These studies report on research done by the author(s) of the study.
  • They will include how the study was done, what was discovered, and what conclusions were drawn.

Primary research articles identify the parts of an original research study. Look for section labels within the article or abstract

  • Introduction or purpose
  • Method or Design or Approach
  • Finding or results or outcomes or conclusion
  • Originality or value

Look for the following research types within the title and abstract 

  • Clinical Trial/Study/Report
  • Observational Study
  • Empirical Research/Study/Report
  • Qualitative/Quantitative Study
  • Field Study
